Can a VCD member use their benefit for non-prescription sunglasses if they don’t need glasses?
Yes. Unlike almost every other vision plan VCD allows our members to use their benefit to purchase non-prescription Sunglasses, standard computer wear or upgraded readers.
Can I cancel at any time?
Vision Care Direct is a pre-paid vision plan. The rates are based on either a one time payment or 12 equal payments for 12 months. If you have an individual plan you agree to keep the plan for 12 months when you sign up and choose the 12 month payment option. Therefore, you cannot cancel your plan until the 12 months have passed or you have paid the annual membership fee. In some cases we allow a member to cancel early if they have not used their plan that year but are unable to issue refunds because administrative fees and sales expenses are incurred for each plan when a member initially signs up. If you have a plan through your employer, you are subject to rules set by federal guidelines and therefore a qualifying event may allow you to end your plan early.
Why doesn’t my plan start over at open enrollment (group members)
The eligibility rules are set by the contract that your employer agreed to when adding Vision Care Direct as a benefit option. Rates for members/employees are based on an 11 month eligibility period. In other words your benefit is available to you every 11 months unless your plan defines it differently. In the event of an emergency or other unusual event, you may be allowed to access your benefit sooner than eleven months if approved by your employer.
Does Vision Care Direct have a LASIK benefit?
Some plans in some areas of the country may include a negotiated discount on lasik at approved providers. Please refer to your plan documents to see if you have these benefits available on your group plan. At this time, our individual plan does not have lasik related benefits. Submit LASIK reimbursement request.
Will I receive a member card when I purchase Vision Care Direct?
Members ID cards are available upon request for now, but are NOT needed to obtain care or benefits. VCD is moving toward a more green approach to help reduce costs and waste created by paper ID cards. An electronic version of the ID card can be emailed or obtained by the member by logging into their account on www.visioncaredirect.com
Can members take advantage of their exam only plan and still access an Out of Network provider for their materials?
Yes. You can take your prescription to any provider that will agree to fill it anywhere you choose and then file for out of network benefits. We recommend you call the out of network provider to verify that they will accept prescriptions from other providers before you go in. Please note that Out of Network reimbursements are generally less than the benefit than you will receive at an in network provider. Out of Network requests can be made if a member elects to purchase materials at any online source. Can I purchase my glasses online with VCD?
Members may purchase glasses online and then submit an out of Network Request for payment from Vision Care Direct (VCD). Please note that Out of Network reimbursements are generally less than the benefit than you will receive at an in network provider. Out of Network requests can be made if a member elects to purchase materials at any online source. You must provide an invoice and complete the OON form found on our website at https://members.visioncaredirect.com/oon/ . Currently, Vision Care Direct does not have an online option for members to purchase eyewear and use their benefit but we are currently exploring this option.

What’s the difference between a PLUS provider and a standard provider?
A Vision Care Direct PLUS provider has agreed to enhance the normal benefit that all members receive with VCD. When you see a PLUS provider and your company has a PLUS plan, you can receive standard anti-reflection coating at no additional charge on any lens type. In addition to this, if you are a multi-focal wearer you can also receive standard digital progressive lenses at no additional charge. These upgrades can save members hundreds of dollars when they elect to see a PLUS provider.
Can a person/employee sign up for more than one VCD plan?
Yes, if your company allows the multiple plan option. VCD has plan members who want Prescription Sunwear in addition to their regular eyewear. Plan members can sign up for a Gold, Silver or Materials Only plan and sign up for Prescription Sunwear. Both plans can be payroll deducted when working through your employer. Individuals simply sign up for both.
Is there a waiting period before the member can use their benefit?
No. We ask plan members to wait 30 days when they have an employer sponsored plan to make sure the member and his/her family members are in our computers. The best indicator that they are in the computers and ready to seek care is that they have their VCD Membership Card in hand. Individual members who sign up online have immediate access to their plan.
